Answer to Some Frequently Asked Questions
for 2012-2013 School Year Registration

The online registration doesn’t work, what can I do?

If you encounter an error, please give it another try.  First use the refresh button.  If it doesn’t work, you may need to close all your browser windows and start from scratch.  If you still have problem, please copy down any error message, and send to huaxiabw@yahoo.com with detailed description of the problem.  Someone will get back to you.

I cannot input Chinese, how do I enter my child’s Chinese name?

If your computer has not been setup for Chinese input, you can use one of the online tools, e.g.,  http://www.chinese-tools.com/tools/ime.html.  If there is still difficulty, you can leave those blank for now, but please be sure to write Chinese names of you and your child(ren) on the form your send to us with the payment.

I registered once, but I don’t remember my password, what should I do?

On the registration web site, select the link to retrieve password.  You will receive it through e-mail.

I already registered, how can I make a change?

If you haven’t yet mailed payment, you can go to the web site, delete the one you don’t want, and make different class selections and submit again.  Please note that your registration will not be completed until you mail in your payment and signed confirmation page.  If your account status is “registered”, you cannot make any change on the web site.  Please submit any request for change through e-mail at huaxiabw@yahoo.com.  Please use “Registration Change” in the subject line.

What is the time for the new school and how many classes will there be?

Huaxia Chinese School at Bridgewater will hold classes on Sundays between 9:30AM and 1:00PM.  The school time will be divided into four study periods.  Typically, students will enroll in one of the Chinese classes (which lasts for two periods) and one or two of the culture classes.

How many classes can I register for my child?

Each child may register for one Chinese class (which has two study periods each day) and up to two culture classes.  If you choose not to register your child for Chinese classes, you can also register him/her for culture classes.  However, if the class size has to be limited, preference will be given to students who take Chinese classes.

What is the schedule for each class?

When you select a class at the web site, the class time will be displayed.  Please note that all the schedules are tentative.  Although we will try to maintain the published schedule, there are times that changes have to be made.  If that happens, we’ll inform all the affected students as soon as possible.

Can we select only one class period in a Chinese class?  Is $270 for one Chinese class or two classes?

All Chinese classes run for two periods.  The tuition for the program is $270 for the school year, or $160 for one semester.  If your child have special needs and cannot make to the class in both periods, but you still want him/her to enroll in a class, you should have a plan worked out with your child so that he/she can make up the missing work and keep up with class.  There will not be any tuition discount for such cases.

What portion of the Chinese class tuition is allocated to book fee?

The Chinese class tuition shown on the registration web page includes the base tuition and following book fee.

Pre-school, Pin-yin, and Standard Chinese classes from 1st grade to 9th grade: $25.

Ma Liping Textbooks: $55.

CSL: $90.

My child was in PinYin class in another Chinese school last year.  Which Chinese class should she/he be in?

Our school offers two programs for Chinese classes.  One program uses “Standard Chinese” as textbook, and the other uses a textbook series authored by Li-Ping Ma.  We suggest that you consider it carefully, and, if possible, borrow sample books from your friends and try them with your children.

My child was in a 3rd grade class using “Ma Liping textbooks” (books 7-9) last year.  There isn’t a 4th grade Ma Liping textbook class in the list of choices at the online registration web site.  What should I do?

Regretfully, we will not be offering a 4th grade “Ma Liping textbook” class this year.  Because there is significant difference in the two sets of textbooks, it may be difficult for students to simply move to the regular 4th grade class using “Standard Chinese” textbooks.  To help students make the transition, we will offer a special transitional 4th grade level class using “Standard Chinese” as textbook.  This class (or possibly two parallel classes) is set up to meet the special needs of the students who just finished the MLP textbooks 7-9.  However, we recognize that there is a wide range in the language proficiency of the students in the same class.  Depending on your child’s individual situation, you may also want to consider regular 3rd grade class. If you have access to the Standard Chinese textbook (3rd grade), it would be best for you to take a look at these books together with your child, and find the best fit.  If you would like to discuss with one of our staff members in more detail, please e-mail with your phone number to huaxiabw@yahoo.com.  Please use “Registration” in the subject line.

We really like Ma Liping textbooks.  Why don’t you offer classes at higher grade levels?

Ma Liping’s textbook series has some interesting features that make it a strong competitor among available textbooks for oversee Chinese schools.  Its strength is mostly in its lower-grade-level books, and it may be suitable for some of the children who are used to conversational Chinese in their daily life.  However, at higher grade levels, the attractiveness of this textbook series diminishes for most students, and there are increasing difficulties in continuing with the program.  Based on the feedbacks from both our school and several of our sister schools, we have decided to take a two-tiered approach.  At entry level, we’ll continue to offer programs using both textbooks to give parents more choices.  At higher grade levels (after the third grade), both tracks will merge.  A special class will be offered to help students to make the transition.  For this year, there will be transitional classes in two levels, both 4th grade and 5th grade.

Is CSL class appropriate for me?

Our CSL program is designed for students who knew little or don’t know any Chinese language.  In the class, the instructions will primarily be delivered in English.

For culture classes, can I register my child in any class I choose?

Not always.  First, all classes have size limit.  Secondly, when there are multiple classes for the same subject, typically they are arranged by the age and/or skill level of the students.  Although the software will let you register in any class with available space, the school reserves the right to make adjustments.  We will not assign into a class any student who is not in the appropriate range of age / skill level.  Your understanding is greatly appreciated.

My child would like to be assigned to the same class as her/his friend.  How can I request that?

Please coordinate with his/her friend’s family to register them in the same class. The school policy does not allow people to make parallel changes.

What can I do if the class I want to register is full?

In some cases, we have set up waiting lists for certain classes.  You can “register” in such list.  There will be no charge unless you can be assigned into the class, or if we can create a new class.  If there isn’t a waiting list, please use Feedback button on the web site to let us know, or send us an e-mail at huaxiabw@yahoo.com.  Please use “Registration” in the subject line.
